Food Is Art, Framed on the Wall

The Rising Sun, Milland

back to The Fifth Element

Some projects come from cold emails or business cards. Others start in the best possible way, over a good meal and a friendly chat.

We’ve been regulars at The Rising Sun in Milland for years. It's a beautiful country pub with an ever-changing seasonal menu, friendly staff and a warm atmosphere that draws people from across the South Downs and beyond. I often take part in their photography and artist gallery, so there’s always been a creative connection, though nothing formal.

That changed in March 2024, during a birthday lunch with my wife. As we were finishing up, we struck up a conversation with Ben, the owner. To both of our surprise, he realised for the first time that I was a professional food and hospitality photographer. “Why haven’t we talked about this before?” we both laughed.

As fate would have it, Ben had been considering a refresh of the pub’s dining room artwork for some time – and right there and then, he commissioned me to produce a series of food photography pieces to hang on the walls.

Over the following few months, we worked closely with Ben and his team to create a beautiful, seasonal and ingredient-focused collection of 16 mounted and framed prints. Each image was chosen to reflect the kind of food The Rising Sun is proud to serve: fresh, local, honest, and full of character.

After considerable research and analysis, I instructed Sequoia Studios to refresh the artwork in the Rising Sun’s dining room. The project required a lot of consultation and a vast array of work was assessed and discussed. Marlon’s patience at this process was very much appreciated! Eventually we settled on about 15 pieces of work that exactly captured our requirements. The work was then produced to the highest of standards, delivered swiftly and erected perfectly. It was an enjoyable experience delivered without fuss. I’ve had so many comments and compliments so the work has proved to be both engaging and thought provoking and sits effortlessly within my brand and culinary ethos. I couldn’t be happier!

The final collection includes:
squash, asparagus, wild garlic, micro herbs, chard, duck eggs, clams, mackerel, peas, baby parsnips, fresh bread, globe artichokes, garlic, spices, heritage tomatoes, and a show-stopping côte de boeuf.

Today, these prints now adorn the walls of The Rising Sun’s dining room, adding warmth, colour and a clear sense of place. We’ve heard from Ben that they’re regularly admired by customers — and it’s been a real joy to see our work become part of the pub’s daily rhythm and aesthetic.

It was a pleasure turning a casual conversation into a creative collaboration — and a reminder that sometimes, the best projects begin when you least expect them.
