🎨 International Artist Day

Painting With Light, Nourished By The Earth

back to The Fifth Element

Today we celebrate International Artist Day, an annual tribute to creativity, imagination and craftsmanship across every medium, from brush and clay to lens and light.

The 2025 theme celebrates the connection between healthy food, the earth and the artists who care for it. It’s a reminder that creativity and nourishment share a common root: both begin with respect for what nature provides and both thrive when tended with care.

For me, that message strikes deeply. My work as a photographer is grounded in food, in the textures, tones and forms that come from the soil, from local growers and from the kitchens that transform ingredients into art.

I’ve always been inspired by the Dutch masters including Hieronymus Bosch, Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondriaan. Each had their own relationship with light, form and nature. From Bosch’s allegorical gardens to Van Gogh’s wheat fields glowing with life. They understood that art and the natural world are inseparable.

While I’m not a traditional painter (though I do sketch a little), photography is my medium and light is my paint. To honour this year’s theme, I created a still life of three pears on a wooden board, captured using a light-painting technique inspired by the Dutch masters. It’s my small homage to the beauty of simple, honest food and to the growers who nurture it and the artists who celebrate it.

In every Sequoia Studios project, whether I’m photographing food, drinks or interiors, I’m chasing the light that reveals the story behind the subject. Light that gives life to food, character to people and emotion to the moment.

This year’s theme is a wonderful reminder that art can nourish, just as food can inspire. Both start from the same place, a respect for the earth and a desire to share something beautiful.

Do you want to bring the same artistic storytelling to your hospitality business? At Sequoia Studios, we craft food and drink photography with the care and creativity of fine art, turning everyday moments into unforgettable visuals.
